Obama Will Change UK Politics

with one comment

Fresh from Andrew Sullivan’s argument yesterday that Barack Obama’s election will define the GOP, Will Hutton argues in The New Statesman that Obama’s election will actually have a profound impact on politics in the UK.

US culture has become deeply integrated in our own, both across entertainment and foreign relations. US enemies are our enemies, US wars have become our wars. Obama’s election, and the promotion of the centrist left in the US, will provide far more backing for more liberal policies to come into action in the coming years and could well mark a key shift in broader policy philosophy in the UK. Certainly, given his actions thus far, it’s likely everyone here will keep hating the US for much longer.
